World Food Day
Every October 16 is "World Food Day" !
This is a day to think how to improve hunger andmalnutrition. There are many people
who are difficult to gain the enough food, so in 1945, Unaited Nations set it. The theme of
this year is “Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow." It means, if we use technology
effectively, we will be able to be close to solving the problems. Today, I will focus on North
Amrica, and introduce the activities in practice.
North America faces a paradoxical food crisis. Places like the United States and Canada
throw away around 30% to 40% of their total food annually. On the other hand, tens of
millions of North Americans live in "food deserts"(There are people who can't eat). Huge
sports stadiums, which prepare food for up to 80,000 fans per game, have traditionally
caused a lot of waste. Unsold menues, over-purchased raw ingredients were routinely throw
away.
To improve this situation, major food bank networks like Feeding America and Food
Banks Canada have started "Stadium Drive" campaigns on World Food Day. Soon after
the final whistle blows and fans exit the arena, teams of NGO volunteers enter the stadium
kitchens and VIP lounges. They carefully pack untouched and high-quality prepared food into
containers. America is under the legal protection of the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food
Donation Act, which shields donors from liability when donating food in good faith. So, they
can convey those foods to people in need.
Among NGOs made "Ticket-for-Cans" promotions at stadium gates. Fans
who bring unopened food items can receive team goods, discounted game tickets, or
entries for signed jerseys. Also, Junior sports clubs and youth academies stands at
stadium entrances to collect food donations. Special educational "farm-to-stadium"
kitchen tours are organizeed to teach kids about the life cycle of food. About the
government, city mayors and state governors stand on the pitch or court on World Food
Day. And with team owners, they announces cutting local food waste in half by 2030,
using the platform to drive public awareness.
Together, as businesses and neighbors, we can build a sustainable future where no
food is wasted and every meal is filled with joy.
